National Homeless Advice Service

Making it happen

Generally speaking, it is those agencies most deeply involved in supporting and accommodating young people at an earlier stage in the pathway who will take the lead in strategies to assist these young people in taking the final steps towards an independent home.

By this point in a young person’s journey, statutory duties under the Housing Act and Children Act may well have been discharged: although housing support agencies have a commitment to the individual young people with whom they have been working and in their successful transition to adult life, the agencies will nevertheless have an interest in moving them on to make room for new young people in their services.

However, the continued involvement of Supporting People and statutory authorities is crucial to the effective operation of schemes promoting independence, and to their development in increasingly challenging economic times.
