National Homeless Advice Service

Benefits and financial support for young people

Young people who are out of work or on a low income may be able to claim benefits such as housing benefit, jobseeker’s allowance or employment and support allowance.

Additional financial support may also be available for care leavers.

Help may also be available locally through schemes to provide deposits and rent in advance to young people on low incomes, and there may also be grants and loans available to help young people set up a new home.

Housing benefit and universal credit rules for young people

The age of a housing benefit or universal credit claimant can determine the amount of benefit paid.

Welfare benefits

Different benefit rules apply depending on whether a young person is 16/17 years old, or 18 and older.

Additional financial support for young people

Additional financial support may be available for young people trying to rent for the first time.
