National Homeless Advice Service

Introduction: finding settled accommodation

Some young people will need practical and financial help only at the start of their tenancies, while others will require ongoing support to make sure they can sustain their tenancies and learn to successfully live independently.

This section looks at how to help young people find their first independent homes, how they can be helped to pay for them, and how they can also be helped to keep their new homes.

This section also looks at the options for young people renting in both the private rented sector, and the social rented sector, and also at the options for young people aged 16 and 17 who wish to hold a tenancy but are legally too young to do so.

The option of low-cost home ownership is not dealt with here - for more information on this, see Shelter.
