Age disputes and age assessments

Sometimes disputes over the age of unaccompanied and/or undocumented young asylum seekers may arise.

The courts have established a number of key principles to be applied when carrying out an age assessment, and have approved guidance issued by the London Boroughs of Hillingdon and Croydon on the procedure to be followed by social services departments. Assessments complying with these principles are described as ‘Merton compliant age assessments’.
